I am sure anyone who is a parent would agree with me when I say that time flies when you have kids. The days may be long, but the years are oh so very short. We recently celebrated our Little Guy’s first birthday with a “One in a Flash” party. I feel like just yesterday I was trying to juggle a newborn and do Valentine activities with my almost two year old. Now I have a 1 year old and an almost 3 year old. Let me just go cry in the corner for a minute.
As I was thinking about the kind of party I wanted to have for him, I kept coming back to the fact that time was flying way to fast and my love of all things pictures, as evidenced by my 1500 –2000 pictures a month….yes I admit I have a problem and no I am not planning on fixing it anytime soon haha. “One in a Flash” seemed completely fitting. As I turned to Pinterest, I realized this wasn’t a theme that has been overdone or used too often so I had to get creative and I crossed my fingers that it would all turn out like I had pictured. Like the other two birthday parties I have thrown, Little Miss’ Very Hungry Caterpillar 1st Birthday Party and her Winnie the Pooh 2nd Birthday party, my absolute favorite thing to do is hand create the birthday invitations. The rest of the party cannot come together without the invitations. I had a vision in my head and couldn’t wait to make it a reality and I am so happy with how they turned out.
My second favorite part of planning and throwing birthday parties for my babies is making their birthday outfits. We kept it simple for Little Man and I used Heat Transfer Vinyl to create the letters for ONE and ironed them onto a blank tshirt. We paired it with a pair of jeans (aren’t baby jeans just the cutest things ever?) and we had the cutest outfit for our little guy to party in.
While I knew I wanted to decorate using lots and lots of pictures and old cameras, I knew I needed an overall color scheme to tie it all together. I took Little Mans weekly pictures on a red, white, and blue quilt and decided a red and white color scheme would be perfect.
I left off the blue to not be so patriotic. I brought the color scheme together using red and white washi tape, bakers twine, tablecloths, circle cutouts, table runners, balloons, and streamer paper and completed the look using red and white plates, cups, and straws.
I couldn’t miss the opportunity to set up a photo booth to capture the guests and it served as the perfect backdrop for taking pictures of what we hoped to be Little Man destroying his cake; however, he was not a fan and started to cry the second he got icing on his hands. To create it, I simply taped streamer paper to the wall alternating red and white. To create the polaroid photo booth prop, I bought a piece of foam board for $.88 from Walmart and used an Exacto knife to cut out the center and then wrote on it to remember what it was for.
I used some bakers twine, burlap and miscellaneous ribbon and fabric to create a high chair banner. It was one of my favorite décor pieces.
I used a paper party hat, opened it up and then traced it onto a piece of fabric and hot glued it to the paper party hat to create a cute hat to go with the rest of the party. I added some pom pom ribbon to the bottom and glued a pom pom on the top. Now if only I had remembered to put it on his head. Ooops.
A “One in a Flash” party wouldn’t be complete without pictures galore and you better believe I plastered them all over. Cupboard doors, walls, the food table. You name it, I think it had a picture on it, including the blueberry muffins and cupcakes which had cute little pictures of the Little Guy attached to red toothpicks. Simple and easy cupcake pick.

We had a waffle and yogurt bar for brunch and it was a hit for both moms and littles. Being able to use the toppings for both the waffles and yogurt was perfect and oh so yummy. My waffle maker may just be my new favorite kitchen gadget and waffles topped with whipped cream and strawberries may be my new favorite way to eat waffles. Yummy.
I always love coming up with fun useful party favors that are going to be used and not taken home and thrown in the trash. I whipped up a batch of red homemade playdough and rolled them into little balls and added a cute little tag to them for each of our guests.
His party certainly was a “picture perfect” event and we cannot believe our sweet boy is one. He definitely had a ball during all his celebrations.
And I will leave you with this picture perfect cake smash picture my sweet friend took, before little man dumped it and got mad at the little icing that was on his hands.
