Our November Mommy & Me Book club playdate has come and gone and I am sharing all about our zoo-tastic day spent reading and playing with friends. We look forward to our book clubs every month and this one was no exception.

This month we read Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell.
We have a private facebook group that we use for communicating about book clubs and we love making themed “invitations” for each meeting. A week before our meeting, I shared this invitation with our friends and shared some information about our meeting with them.
Between my husband’s, mine, and my brother-in-law’s stuffed animals that we all saved from our childhood, we have our fair share of animals that we used to transform our playroom into a zoo. I used some clipart and fonts to create my signs and added some sheets to section off the different animal exhibits in the zoo.
The night before our playdate, I posted a video in our group to get the kids excited about our playdate the next day. I showed them all these packages that had just been “dropped off by the delivery guy” and the guy told me they were for our playdate the next day. In the background of our video I had animal noises playing via my computer. I acted a bit nervous as to what could be inside those boxes and left it at that so the kids could be left thinking.
When the kids arrived the next day they were ushered into the “Visitor Center” because the zoo had “Wild Animals on the Loose” and we needed to go over some safety protocols before we could go into the wild.
As we read the story, each child got to open up a package which they absolutely loved. Their favorite part was the end when the package had not one, but 10 different stuffed dogs for all the kids to play with.
After our story, we set out to try to recapture all of the loose zoo animals. The kids made cages with playdough and craft sticks and trapped our Little People zoo animals inside and then moved onto making cages for all the animals using our wooden blocks.
We finished the playdate off by making cheese and pretzel giraffes and graham cracker, peanut butter, and pretzel lions. The kids just ate it up (pun intended.)
We all had a blast and cannot wait for our next book club.
