Matthew 6:19-21 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is there your heart will be also."
Where do your treasures lie?
When
God was going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah he told Lot and his wife to
not look back...while Lot kept going his wife did not. She looked back
and because of her disobedience she was turned into a pillar of salt. So
why did she turn back? Because she was unable to fully let go. She let
her heart be led away by the false attractions and pleasures of this
world. The treasures she had stored up were treasures on this earth and
not those in heaven. The position of her heart led to severe
consequences. Matthew 6:24 says "No one can serve 2 masters." She was
unable to full obey God because she was holding onto pieces of her old
life.
Now fast forward to Abraham and Isaac.
Isaac is born and God tells Abraham to take his son and sacrifice him.
Say what? This child, which God promised Abraham and then gave him, is
now going to be sacrificed? What did Abraham do? He packed up everything
he needed and took Isaac to sacrifice him. He didn't hesitate. He
didn't plead with God for his sons life. He didn't freak out questioning
God. He willingly and humbly obeyed. Wow!!! Abraham trusted God with
his life, his sons life. He loved God so greatly that he was willing to
sacrifice his son because that was what God asked him to do. This
precious gift he had waited so long for.
The
posture of Abraham's heart is completely different than that of Lot's
wife isn't it? Abraham, even though he loved his son so incredibly much,
loved God more and showed that in his obedience. His treasures were
being stored up in heaven not on earth. Lot's wife loved the things of
this world more and showed that in her disobedience.
So
again I ask: Where do your treasures lie? Have you stored up treasures
for yourself here on earth or are you storing up treasures in heaven?
Have you made idols out of things in your life that you would struggle
to give up if asked to do so? If the Lord asked you to give up something
right now (insert your most favorite thing in the world...maybe it's
coffee or social media or your kids) could you do it without hesitation?
Do you love God with your entire heart that you would willingly give up
any of those things or more right now for Him and not look back?
This
week I encourage you to evaluate your treasures and the posture of your
heart. Is there anything in your life that you have placed higher than
God? (drinking coffee, social media, your phone, playing sports,
watching sports, binging tv, your kids, your husband, leading this
committee, having the on trend clothes etc.) Pray that the Lord would
show you the things that you are elevating higher than Him and then ask
the Lord to help you get your priorities straight. God first. Everything
else after that.
