Resist Art Paper Plate Turtle Craft

Resist Art Paper Plate Turtle Craft

We love a good craft activity around here and love trying out new things. One of our favorite art activities is resist art. We wanted to incorporate some art techniques into our Ocean theme and decided to incorporate resist art into our turtle themed day and our resist art turtle craft was born.

Painting is one of Little Miss 2’s favorite activities and would choose painting over everything else any day. She was super excited when we were able to stretch the painting for this craft out over 2 days.

MATERIALS:

-2 paper plates

-light green paint

-dark green paint

-contact paper or washi tape or painters tape

-paint brushes

-blue stick tac

-scissors

-glue

-wiggly eyes

DIRECTIONS:

***First please note before starting, we spread this craft out over 2 days due to dry time. We like to do our activities in the morning before nap time and the craziness that evening routine seems to bring. This ensured that our plate was fully dry after the first day. As long at the plate is fully dry, you could do this all in one day if your times allows. ***

HELPFUL TIP: Add blue sticky tac to the back of the plate to hold the plate in place while your little ones are painting. This saves a lot of frustration and mess when they are little.

1. Start off by painting the one paper plate with the light color of green. Make sure they cover the entire plate.

2. After the plate is dry, use contact paper (or tape) and mask off the blocks on the turtles back. I choose to use contact paper because it peels up easier than tape and doesn’t tear what is underneath. I just took the contact paper and cut tiny one block strips and ran them vertical and then horizontal across the painted plate making sure they were pressed securely onto the plate.

3. Give your little one some of the darker green paint and a paint brush and have them cover the entire plate once more. Once the plate is covered, you can choose to wait until it is dry to pull up the contact paper or pull it up while wet. I always pull up while wet and I never have any issues.

4. While your little ones still have the dark green paint, give them the other paper plate and have them cover it in green paint as well. This will be for the turtles head and feet.

5. Cut out the turtles head and feet and adhere to the underside of the turtles body with glue.

6. Add googly eyes or hand draw them on and display for an adorable turtle craft that is perfect for an ocean theme.
