Transportation Themed Books for Kids

I’ve said it many times before, but boy do I love a good book and having themed books on my bookshelves for us to read during our themes is a must. While I have a HUGE selection of my own books that I have gathered over the years, I also frequent the library to find new treasures that I may not have. I have complied a list of books that we have read throughout our Transportation Tot School Unit.

Freight Train by Donald Crews is a great little board book that is perfect for little ones learning their colors. It is such an easy read and the illustrations, while simple, are amazing and help tell the story perfectly.

Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle is by far one of our favorite books. Little Blue and all his friends have to work together to get a big dump truck out of the mud. This fun tale will have your little ones reading along as all the animals and trucks make noises all throughout. It is such a great book for teaching about helping others and what true friends are all about.

Alphabeep by Debora Pearson is a fantastic ABC book that has you zooming throughout the city as you are introduced to different vehicles and road signs for each of the letters of the alphabet.

The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper is a great classic adventure of strength and determination and helps teach that even though you may be small you can accomplish great things if you set your mind to it.

The Three Little Rigs by David Gordon is an adorable twist on the classic Three Little Pigs. The 3 rigs all set out to build their own garages, but then the big bad wrecking ball comes through threatening their homes. The 3 rigs have to work together to stand up against the wrecking ball.

Goodnight Johnny Tractor by Running Press was a book that Little Miss found on our Library Trip. She LOVES tractors so this one has been on repeat. Our favorite part of this book is that it glows in the dark. What little one wouldn’t love a glow in the dark book. Such an adorable story with this added element of fun.

Truck Driver Tom by Monica Wellington is a beautifully illustrated book that takes you along on an adventure through the city with Truck Driver Tom. All through the city, Tom passes other vehicles that are big and small. This book is great for both boys and girls.

My big Truck Book by Roger Priddy is a great vocabulary building book. This book features awesome real life images of different types of trucks and equipment and also features the name written underneath so your little ones can see it pair with the picture.

Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site by Sherri Duskey Rinker is an adorable book where all the trucks and equipment you find on a construction site say goodnight to get ready for a new day on the job.

Shark Train by Chris Barton is a funny story that your littles ones will love. Can a shark and train really compete against each other? Who do you think will win? The shark and the train compete against one another doing all sorts of things that will make kids laugh.

Things that Go by DK Publishing is a great nonfiction book with real pictures of different things that move. This is a perfect addition to any transportation unit. This books poses questions to kids to help encourage children to think about why the machines are useful.

Truck Stuck by Sallie Wolf is a fun rhyming book. Truck gets stuck and despite all the efforts to get it out they can’t and all the cars begin backing up. Instead of getting mad, several kids, some balloons, and a dog turn the unfortunate event into something to smile about.

alphabet trucks

Alphabet Trucks by Samantha R. Vamos is a fun alphabet book that takes you through all of the different types of trucks one letter at a time. Many of the types of trucks are pretty recognizable, but this book is sure to teach your little ones some new types of trucks they have never heard of before.

I Love Trucks by Philemon Sturges is all about different trucks and the important jobs that each of the different trucks has within the community.

Alphabet Trains by Samantha R. Vamos is just like her Alphabet Trucks book and features different types of trains one letter of the alphabet at a time. Your little ones will learn what an incline train and bullet train are among many others.

old mcdonald

Old MacDonald Had a Truck by Steve Goetz is an adorable twist on the classic Old MacDonald song. Different vehicles show up doing what they each do best and will have your little ones singing along with you.

Transportation Themed Books for Kids. These are great for toddlers and preschoolers.
