One of my favorite themes to teach is by far the Apple Theme. There are so many different things you can do with it and it doesn’t hurt that autumn is my favorite time of year. One of the activities that Little Miss 2.5 loves to do, but still needs some work on is sorting and the second I saw these fun apple themed kids plates I knew I HAD to have them and knew they would be perfect for an apple themed color sort activity. I set the trays up for Little Miss and then gave her some red, yellow, and green pom poms and pouch cap lids and modeled for her what she would do with them. It was fun to watch her process.
At first she preferred to find all of one color of items and place them on the coordinating plate and then she would move onto the next, but then soon moved to just picking one up and putting it on the correct plate.
I had two different greens out for her to sort and this occasionally gave her trouble as she wanted to call the light green color yellow. We discussed the different shades of green and after a little while she was placing them on the green plate.
These plates will be perfect for years to come, not only as plates the kids can eat off of, but also for other learning activities like part, part whole, sorting by size of one color, and so many more.
