Montessori Inspired Farm Animal Picture Match

Montessori Inspired Farm Animal Picture Matching Activity: Find out what the pictures are made from.

A while back I posted about using Shutterfly prints to create some animal cards for Little Miss to use and become familiar with each of the animals. As part of our farm play theme, I pulled out the farm animal cards I had printed and laminated and set up a animal picture match tray for her. She has completed this numerous times and asks for it over and over again.

In order to have more room to work, I set all the cards on her little table and then placed a basket of farm animal figurines we have right next to the cards. I explained to her she could match the animals to the cards. A couple of them had her puzzled at first because the figurine didn’t look like the picture, but she looked through all the pictures and at her animal and figured it out every time. This led to a great discussion about how not all cows, sheep, pigs etc look the same.

Having just turned two, I only gave her the whole cards with both picture and word on it. She can start to become familiar with the animal name on the bottom of the card and as she gets older we can move on to using the 3 part cards for animal identification. I don’t currently have 3 part cards, but as I get more free prints from Shutterfly I plan to use them to make the 3 part animal cards.
