Our family doesn't regularly watch tv and when we do, we watch movies that have been vetted well before our children ever see them. This is an excellent video that discusses what parents should be considering before you show your children anything.
Hosting Family Movie Nights
We love to have themed movie nights, usually after a specific unit of study in our homeschooling, but sometimes just because. Today I wanted to share with you what it looks like for our family to have a Family Movie night and I hope that you can find some inspiration for starting your own family movie nights.
"Rules" For Family Movie Night
There are a couple "rules" that I follow for family movie nights and I wanted to share them with to use as a guide for planning your own family movie nights. Please remember, this is what I do and I am sharing with you for inspiration. This does not mean you have to do what I do, nor does it mean you have to do the same thing every single time. We want to use these opportunities to make connections with our family and to have fun and be creative. We are each creative in our own ways so never discount yourself. Your setup may not look like mine, but I promise that if you put it together with love and care, your kids will have so much fun and you will all make memories together.
Themed Food
The first and the only non-negotiable "rule" for our family movie nights is to have themed food. Whether this be something they ate in the book or movie, or something that goes along with the overall theme, themed food is a must. I also love to make cute food table tents that go along with the theme and will use clipart I have on my computer or will search for movie clipart and add it to a page and print on cardstock.
Decorations
I like to decorate at least a little bit. I personally love to go all out on decorating, but sometimes it's just not possible. If I don't have any decorations that go along with the theme, I will at the very least grab a tablecloth and some colorful plates and silverware and use those. At the very least, a fun color scheme to tie it all together would work.
Activities
We love to incorporate at least one hands-on activity into our day. I like to save and complete a fun craft or two from our lesson/unit study or find something like a themed Bingo or matching game from online somewhere to print out and do. I also love to incorporate the activity, if it's a craft, into the decor for the table area.
Sometimes you may choose to go all out while other times you keep it simple. The point is to have fun, watch a movie, and spend time together. I would love to see your movie nights so be sure to tag me on Instagram @letsplaylearngrow and tag the hashtag #lplgfamilymovienight
