Sometimes you just have to celebrate those fun holidays and national days and we usually do so with activity mats. We have celebrated National Donut Day, National Popcorn Day, National Pizza Day, and National Honeybee Day over the years and all with activity mats. Today I am sharing what some of our National Honeybee Activity mat set ups have looked like and the activities we have done. These activities are perfect for any Bee or Honeybee themed units.
National Honeybee Themed Activity Mats
National Honeybee Day happens each year in August. We love learning about the fascinating creature bees are and why they are so important for nature.
Honeybee Themed Activity Mat One
Scissor Skills
I printed out a page of bees from clipart I had on my computer and printed them on cardstock. I used two of the strips for cutting practice for the kids.
Roll A Bee
For this activity, I drew a hive on the mat and then used a piece of bubble wrap and some yellow paint to give the give a honeycomb a realistic look. I cut apart the clipart bees and placed them around the hive. For this activity, the kids would roll a dice and then add the corresponding number of bees to the hive.
Find and Dab a Circle
Mr. 2 used a yellow dot marker and dotted all of the circles he could find.
Make A Bee
For this activity, I used construction paper and cut out simple shapes and parts for the kids to use to put together their very own honeybees.
Honeybee Themed Activity Mat Two
My kiddos loved our first year Honeybee Activity Mat that a few years after our first one we completed another one. I put this one together after they were in bed one night and they were surprised to find all these fun and exciting activities waiting for them the next morning.
Build a Honeycomb
We used our hexagon pattern block pieces for this activity. I started by drawing a couple of the combs on the mat and then the kids took turns adding honeycombs to the area to create a large honeycomb.
Make A Pattern
For this activity, I printed off different bee themed pictures onto cardstock and cut them apart and the kids used to them to created the different patterns.
Create A Bee
We used paper plates, construction paper, and paint to create some cute and easy bees.
Honeybee Anatomy
We used a Honeybee Anatomy Poster from With His Grace and studied and learned about each of the parts of a Honeybee.
Pattern Block Bees
I traced some pattern block pieces to create a honeybee and then mixed the pieces up. The kids used them to build a honeybee. They also then used the pieces to build their own honeybees without the outlines I drew.
Pattern Bb
Using brown and yellow dot markers, Mr. 4 made a pattern as he traced/filled in the Letter Bb
Say & Cover Numbers
Using some bee themed manipulatives I printed from the computer, Mr. 4 practiced identifying and saying the name of the number and as he identified them he would use the manipulatives to cover them.
And a peek at the whole mat completed.
